Work samples: Story Pole Signs

Project: Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area Signage Upgrade

Darkwood Stories planned, researched and wrote copy for 120+ ‘Story Poles’ which have been installed along public tracks in multiple national parks across north-eastern NSW.

Story poles are standalone signage 600mm by 300mm which are attached to a standing 1800mm high timber sleeper post.

Darkwood Stories undertook extensive field work to develop site-specific ‘breadcrumb trails’ of up to 13 story poles along each nominated walking track. The content for each story pole is carefully matched to the relevant ecological, topographical and geological features of the exact location.

Story poles are designed to enhance the visitor experience of a natural area while seeking to be minimally intrusive. Each story offers an engaging, ‘bite-sized’ interpretative feature which is tangibly connected to the specific environment where the sign is located.
